Santiago Creek Watershed

Suller-Miller Property, Santiago Cyn. Rd.
Project Description -

The John Martin family interests have acquired the 68-acre Hanson properties collection on the Sully-Miller site in East Orange, including the 7.6-acres on the south side of Santiago Canyon Road. JMI Properties-Santiago Partners is composed of Orange Park Acres resident John Martin and his family, and other investor associates.    JMI Properties is also in escrow with the Sully-Miller Land Company to acquire the remaining portions of the 116 acres. The property is a major wildlife corridor and has the potential to become an incredible neighborhood nature park. With a creek full of frogs, trail opportunities, world-class birding, lots of tranquil space, and an undeveloped floodplain, this is a perfect opportunity to preserve a natural refuge for a crowded city. There is even potential for a family-run organic farm! SCWPRP's GOAL: to preserve biological function of the Watershed and preserve/restore habitat for threatened wildlife.

Outdoor Education Center (Rifle Range Pasture Youth Camp), Irvine Park
Project Description - Conventional youth camp, designed primarily for Boy Scouts, proposed for natural creek terrace, overlooking Irvine Regional Park. Camp infrastructure includes church, mining operation, and archery and bb gun range. Natural area will be impacted by sewer, electric, cable TV, phone lines, excessive grading, heavy equipment traffic, and increased visitor traffic upon completion. Design plans do not include any Native American or ecological interpretive experiences. Irvine Regional Park already exists as a perfect outdoor education center (nature center, hiking trails, zoo featuring local wildlife, large group gathering places, fishing, restrooms, etc.). Why take away more habitat to make an expensive new one next to a popular and valuable old one?

Water Conduit & Highway Tunnel Through Santa Ana Mountains
Project Description - The Metropolitan Water District (MWD) of Southern California is wasting $5 million to drill extremely deep holes in remote parts of our precious Santa Ana Mountains (Cleveland National Forest) to test whether a water conduit and highway tunnel can be built between Riverside and Orange counties. This is the beginning of a catastrophic project which will cost as much as $8.5 billion (conservative estimate) to complete. The project will severely threaten the ecological and recreational value of the Santiago Creek Watershed and the Corona-side of the Santa Ana Mountains. In July, four alternative routes were identified, one of which could run through pristine Ladd Canyon which is a proposed wilderness area.
